Dan walked
into his first Bikram Yoga class in the fall of 2000 at the Broadway
studio in NYC, thinking he was about to participate in a gentle,
lightly-heated meditative workshop. Dan's friend had been introduced to
Bikram Yoga several years earlier by his Tae Kwon Do guru in Florida,
and was kind enough to introduce Dan to it under the guise of it being
a “meditation workshop”. He quickly realized that polar fleece-lined
cargo shorts were not the best choice of clothing for this “workshop” –
in fact, they may very well contribute to Dan's untimely demise (after
only ten minutes).
Even though he felt like he got hit by a train the following
morning after each of his first few classes, for some reason Dan
practiced every day during his week-long visit to NYC, and returned
back to NH with a strong desire to practice this yoga with consistency.
Dan wore a ten-pound back brace for almost three years
during his teens in an attempt to correct a life-long severe kyphosis
of the spine (forward curve). The curvature of his spine was still
prevalent after three long years of wearing the brace. He had worked
with physical therapists and strength training coaches at the gym,
putting on extra muscle in an attempt to support and straighten his
spine. After all of that, the kyphosis remained and his back was tight
and sore almost all of the time. Once Dan found Bikram Yoga, however,
he couldn’t help but notice that it started to heal his back almost
immediately. Other people notice too. Dan's posture began to correct
itself and his height changed from 5’10 to almost 6’1.
Dan returned back to NH in 2000 and started commuting
to Cambridge MA almost daily to practice Bikram at the closest studio
to me at that time. Although the amazing results of practicing were so
obvious to him, the long drive to class made his practice sporadic.
Then, in June of 2004 Miranda Chicklis opened a Bikram Yoga in
Nashua…right down the street from his house! The consistency of his
practice increased significantly, to a near-daily practice starting
towards the end of 2005. After a fortunate series of unexpended
events, Dan went out to Los Angeles for Fall 2006 teacher training.
Dan has competed in the New England Regional Yoga
Asana Championships in 2007 and 2008 and he took third place for the
Men's Division in 2007.
He now has the pleasure of both practicing and
teaching Bikram Yoga. His back feels great, he loves his profession,
and his body is well on its way to realigning itself into the form it
was intended to be.
